First Grade at Santa Clara Elementary School is a special academic year of enormous and very visible strides in students' education and formation. It is a year of important development and transitions for our First Grade students, such as: learning to sit in individual desks with all their own supplies at hand; being responsible for their own work; managing basic weekly homework; and learning how to become organized with their new text books and folders. First Graders build upon the foundation set for them in Kindergarten and continue to build on those skills while advancing academically and in their Catholic faith formation.
During their First Grade year, students will not only learn to read with more fluidity and fluency, they will also begin to learn more complex phonics rules as they enter the exciting world literacy. SCES First Grade students will learn to add and subtract with proficiency. By exploring some of the mysteries of science, students learn to better understand, appreciate and respect the world around us.
Our First Grade teacher has a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and has a Master's Degree in Educational Technology. She also has many years of experience in working with students to grow and nurture their love of learning.
SCES utilizes the cutting-edge digital-based IXL English, Language Arts and Math programs, in order to most effectively teach our First Grade students the core academic subjects. These programs are aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
First Graders are enthusiastic learners, who thrive on learning new ideas and gaining new information by using their Growth Mindsets. At Santa Clara Elementary School, we work hard to capture this inherent enthusiasm and excitement for learning, and to instill in our students a love of learning that will grow and continue throughout their years of schooling, while collaborating with parents in building a strong foundation of faith.
